Horror, Thriller, LTBGQ | Canada, 2018 | 15| Netflix, Digital Download | Dark Sky Films | Dir: Colin Minihan | Brittany Allen, Hannah Emily Anderson, Martha MacIsaac, Joey Klein, Charlotte Lindsay Marron. Make sure you see it before someone spoils it for you. What Keeps You Alive is the perfect twisty thriller for a late night viewing with friends. Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw) is particularly memorable as Jackie showcasing remarkable range and control. The cast is committed and capable and does much to keep the picture tonally consistent. A lesbian couple's wedding anniversary in the woods turns into an urgent struggle for survival after a childhood friend and her husband show up unexpectedly at their cabin. No more of the plot will be discussed here as much of the film’s potency derives from an epic rug pull and an elegantly serpentine narrative.Įdited with a shrewd economy and swathed in a diverse, and seriously loud, soundtrack the movie retains its sense of focus even when the protagonists do not. The talented Colin Minihan follows up his cult zombie flick It Stains the Sands Red with a much more mature minimalist shocker that throws stone cold curveballs for fun. These secluded structures are voracious magnets for all things nefarious and nothing good comes of visiting one. never, ever, ever go to a cabin in the woods to do anything, what so ever, at all with anyone…. The pairs idyllic life is shattered beyond repair when a ghastly turn of events tests their relationship to unthinkable limits. Jules's ending means that she is suffering in the woods without anyone to do the humane thing of putting her out of her misery since she killed Jackie.Cute couple Jules and Jackie arrive at a woodland cabin to celebrate their first year of marriage. The animal suffered because her first shot did not kill it. This references how the bear died when Jackie shot it. It is highly improbable that anyone could survive that fall, so it's more likely that she died slowly. Due to the brutal injuries that cover her body as well as the, presumably, several broken bones, it is highly unlikely that she survived after gasping for air. Whether or not she really did is up to the interpretation of the viewer. While trying to cross a lake in a boat, pursued by psycho wife Jackie (Hannah Emily Anderson), a neighbour on the shore asks if everything is okay rather than shout for help, Jules invites the neighbours round for the evening. Just like the last time, she survived the fall all over again and even managed to teach Jackie a lesson. The ending suggests that somehow, Jules is still alive. It is implied that Jules may have survived the fall. A loud gasp of breath is then heard, and the movie comes to an end. As the camera pans away from Jules's presumably dead body, a gasp for air is heard off-screen. The ending of What Keeps You Alive is filled with symbolism and a very bizarre twist. The bear stands for everything wrong with Jackie, her senseless murders, and alludes to her impending death. Her malevolent behavior has existed since childhood. When she sees the bear in the midst of dying, the film reveals that the animal did not ever intend to cause her harm, and that Jackie killed it just do it. When she initially killed the animal, it seems that she felt threatened. The bear symbolizes that she was unable to stay alive despite killing Jules, Jenny, and all of her other wives. The horror-thriller What Keeps You Alive, a stylish if too indulgent psycho-drama, extrapolates that universal fear to operatic heights via a cat-and-mouse game of survival between a woman and. As Jackie clings to trees and searches through the woods for help, she becomes disoriented and dies from a stroke, but not after seeing the bear she killed when she was younger.
